Having the right gear is crucial if you're ghost hunting.  Here is a breakdown of just some of the equipment we use.

Ghost Hunting Gear

Infrared Cams

Infrared Cameras:  Infrared (IR) Cameras are equipped with infrared diodes that illuminate a totally dark area.  These cameras can "see" things in the dark that the human eye cannot and are a critical piece of equipment for any ghost hunter.  The camera to the right can see as far as 150 feet in total darkness.

Infrared Cams

Infrared Cameras:  The camera to the left can illuminate a distance of about 100 feet.  A critical piece of equipment for a large, open room.  The camera to the right has a distance of around 60 feet in darkness.  Note the tripod stands.  Very useful for positioning and getting the right shot of a potential paranormal "hot spot".

Camcorder

Camcorder:  A Handheld camcorder serves two purposes during an investigation. 1) To document the investigation, providing validity of the the techniques used and 2) provide a good cross-reference in the event that something happens.  Cross-pollination of all devices is critical for the validation of evidence.  Many curious things happen that have a perfectly logical, natural explanation.

Wireless Cams W/Audio

Wireless Cameras W/Audio:  Very useful for those hard to reach places.  There are drawbacks though. These small cameras have a limited range of vision, and the wireless audio is often subject to interference, causing what we call "contamination" of potential audio evidence.

Infrared Lights

Infrared lights:  An infrared camera can only illuminate so far, so quite often, these are a necessary accessory to provide additional lighting for dark hallways or big rooms.  We have on hand two different sizes, depending on the need at the time.  They are particularly useful for "backlighting" dark areas, such as basements, hallways and large rooms.

Equipment Vests

Equipment Vests:  These military / law enforcement style vests are ideal for carrying small instruments as well as radios, batteries and flashlights.  The one-size-fits-all design keeps everything at the investigators disposal, so they are ready for anything!

Cams W/Audio & Meters

Cameras W/Audio & Meters:  These small cameras have a small range of vision, but because they are wired, the audio is very useful.  The K II meters have lights that detect spikes in Electromagnetic Fields, sometimes a sign of paranormal manifestation.  The small temperature gauges are ideal for carrying in your pocket.  The drawback - they are not backlit, making it impossible to read without a flash light.

DVD Recorders

DVD Recorders:  We choose to plug in each camera into it's own DVD recorder.  The advantages - They're inexpensive, easy to use, and if one fails, the others are unaffected, unlike the more expensive computerized hard drive systems.  It's also easy to distribute the evidence to investigators for analysis by simply handing them the disk to watch on their DVD players or computers.

Digital Recorders

Digital Recorders:  These small devices are perfect for capturing Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP's) which are ethereal voices not audible to the human ear.  We download the recordings to computers and use audio software to analyze it.  One drawback - the highest quality mode only records around 2 1/2 hours of audio.

Lasers

Lasers: This small pen-sized device casts a laser grid of light. We use this to  detect subtle movement and a potential "shadow person".

35 mm Film Camera

35 mm Film loaded Camera: We use these for time-elapsed photography.  By using the long exposure setting of this camera, we can detect shadows or figures that can otherwise not be photographed with a digital camera.  But...be careful with these!  If you are not familiar with time-elapsed photography, you may inadvertently create your own "illusions", which can be mistaken for apparitions!

Quartz Crystals

Quartz Crystals: Many Ghost Hunters believe in a theory that quartz is capable of capturing and releasing energy.  We use these as a catalyst to gather ambient energy - believed to be used by entities to gather the strength to communicate!

Motion Detector

Motion Detector:  Lights up when it detects movement.  Don't be fooled when using these - if you use radios to communicate with other group members, the radio frequencies can set these off, creating a "false positive".

Flash Lights & Radios

Flash Lights & Radios:  Flashlights are a must.  When you have a group of people wandering around in the dark in an unfamiliar place, you don't want anyone getting hurt.  The same goes for radios (background). We use the radios sparingly, as their use will corrupt our audio and the waves may set off some of our devices (see above).

Cases & Cables

Cases & Cables: Hundreds of feet of wiring and electrical cords are a must.  We do many places where an outlet is a considerable distance away.  Also, we use foam-lined steel cases to organize and carry our expensive equipment,  and it protects it when traveling.

Bags

Bags:  Duffel bags to carry more equipment such as power strips and cables.  We also carry an ample supply of water, snacks and energy drinks.

Logo Magnets

Logo Magnets:  A self-indulgent piece of equipment!  We made large magnets to place on our vehicles to clearly identify us when we do a place that has high security.  We don't use them all the time, though, as discretion and confidentiality during an investigation is important.
