Francisco
Theatre
History:
This building lies in La Veta, at the foot of the beautiful Spanish Peaks of
Southern Colorado; an area that is deep and
rich in the early history of trade and commerce in Southern Colorado.
Built in 1892, the building was originally a Presbyterian Church. It was turned
into a Theatre in the late 20th Century for local performing and
dance troops. The building is currently undergoing restoration.
Reported Activity:
Footsteps are frequently heard across the floors and stage. A
tall dark apparition has been seen on numerous occasions floating down the
hallway, walking down the center of the theatre and disappearing in front of the
stage. People have heard the sounds of children playing and laughing.
Hanging on the
wall is a painted portrait of two actors who used to perform in the theatre.
Shortly after the woman in painting passed away, the acrylic paint on her
portrait began decomposing. Disembodied voices and things being moved from
where they were placed have also been reported.
Investigation:
Tyrus, Roger and Tammy where accompanied by Gary, a local paranormal
investigator for this case. The place consisted of four basic rooms: the entry
way, a hallway, the theatre, and a back room. One infrared camera with
audio was placed in the entryway. Another IR with a separate wireless
audio device was placed in the hallway, two IR cameras, with 60 and 150 foot
range were placed in the theatre facing the stage. Two wired audio devices
were also placed towards the front and back of the theatre. All camera's
and audio began recording approx. 10:35 pm and were shut off by 3:00 am.
The investigators spent time with various hand-held recording devices,
temperature gauges and EMF meters in each of the areas throughout the night.
Findings:
HAUNTED
Like the Fort, we left the old Theatre with an abundance of
video and audio evidence. While the amount of recorded evidence was
significantly less than Ft. Francisco, some credible evidence was still
collected. The Theatre did seem to offer much more in the way of personal
experiences. Before the equipment was even set up and running, a pencil was
mysteriously thrown at the feet of historian Dick Anderson. A box of the
same pencils was found in another room. One investigator smelled perfume
and felt touched on the arm. Another felt three distinct bursts of air in
the ear. All four investigators felt a “blanket” of cold envelope them as
they sat in the theatre seats, causing two of them to feel queasy and
disorientated. The recorded evidence revealed double taps in response to
questions, 3 separate cameras “blurring” and auto-focusing just minutes
apart (faulty power sources were ruled out). A disembodied voice was heard,
and captured on one wired audio device. The physical evidence that could
not be debunked, factored in with the personal experiences, left us to
conclude that there is indeed, paranormal activity here. Is it a ghost or
something else? No one can say for sure, but the fact that this Theatre is
next door to Ft. Francisco, we can’t dismiss the idea that the whole area is
active. Given its storied and sometimes violent past, the possibility is not
surprising.
